Fashion Industry Faces Controversies: ShopMy and Boohoo in Hot Water

The fashion landscape is buzzing with controversy as two major stories dominate the headlines. The influencer platform ShopMy is under fire from researcher Ben Edelman, who alleges that the company is manipulating affiliate commissions. According to Edelman, ShopMy encourages retailers to prioritize its links and cancel commissions owed to competing networks, deviating from the established last-click attribution model. With a current valuation of $1.5 billion, ShopMy has yet to respond to these serious accusations.
In another significant development, British retailer Boohoo has been slapped with a €2.3 million (approximately $2.7 million) fine by France's consumer watchdog. The penalty arises from misleading practices, including inflated discounts and mislabeling synthetic materials as “leather” or “suede.” An alarming 48% of the promotions examined were found to be price hikes, with an additional 40% failing to qualify as genuine discounts. This ruling follows a $100 million settlement in the U.S. over similar charges four years ago, although Boohoo claims these issues stemmed from previous management.
