The FBI has arrested 35-year-old Jessica Bowie, accusing her of planning a deadly attack on the New York State Capitol. Authorities allege Bowie intended to kill lawmakers and cause extensive damage after pledging loyalty to the terrorist organization ISIL.
The Department of Justice announced the arrest on Thursday, emphasizing that investigators intervened before Bowie could execute her violent intentions. Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg stated the agency believes she aimed to flee to Syria after the attack.
A detailed complaint reveals that Bowie, an Albany resident, was an active social media user who expressed support for terrorism on multiple platforms. One alarming post praised the September 11 attacks, while another message to an FBI informant indicated her desire to create a bomb targeting the capitol. She reportedly expressed, “I want to destroy as much of the building as possible and kill the senators.”
As part of her alleged plot, Bowie received $200 from an informant to purchase bomb-making materials from Home Depot and was seen taking reconnaissance photos of the capitol. Following her arrest, she acknowledged the serious consequences of her actions, stating, “Material support is up to 20 years in prison. I already Googled it before. I know I’m going to jail.”
