Fiona Brown Secures $1.48 Million Settlement Amidst Controversial Allegations

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 1 min read

Fiona Brown, the former chief of staff to Senator Linda Reynolds, has received a hefty $1.48 million settlement from the Commonwealth, claiming her workplace rights were undermined following Brittany Higgins' rape allegations. Brown contended that she was unfairly made a scapegoat during the Morrison government's response to the scandal.

Initially, Higgins confided in Brown about the alleged assault by Bruce Lehrmann at Parliament House. As the situation escalated, Brown argued that she was denied the chance to defend herself and faced media scrutiny without adequate support or oversight.

Her claims, presented to Fair Work last year, highlighted a tense atmosphere during a Question Time where then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison faced intense questioning from opposition leader Anthony Albanese regarding Higgins’ allegations. Brown expressed feeling "frightened" when Morrison falsely stated he had conferred with her on the matter, a claim she disputed.

The settlement, reached through mediation earlier this month, allows Brown to disclose the payout amount, a rarity in such cases. However, it does not imply any admission of liability or apology from the Commonwealth, as noted by a spokesperson for Attorney General Michelle Rowland. The case was initially slated for trial in March, with Morrison and other officials expected to testify.
