Flat Beat Inspires Unique Workspace Design in Perth

A creative new office space in Subiaco, Western Australia, has drawn inspiration from the iconic 1990s track 'Flat Beat' by Mr Oizo. This project, known as Flat Office, was designed by local studio State Twenty Eight, featuring lead designer Sean Chan alongside directors Miriam Terry and Kate McGee.

The client's vision was clear: to establish a professional yet edgy workplace. The design team used the song's distinctive 'glitchy, repetitive rhythm' as a foundation, crafting a spatial experience that captures the essence of the music. 'What we found intriguing was not the song itself but the way it behaves,' said the architects, emphasizing the powerful impact of subtle changes.

Among the standout features is a vivid green work area inspired by children's play tables, which adds a playful touch to the otherwise formal timber paneling. Chan remarked, 'It is a small gesture, but one that perfectly captures the spirit of the project, balancing professionalism with fun curiosity.'

The office also includes cinematic elements that reflect the client's passion for film. Upon entering, visitors are welcomed by an immersive light environment reminiscent of the iconic bat bunker from Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. The bathrooms take on a darker, Blade Runner 2049-inspired aesthetic, enhancing the overall creative atmosphere.

While the design exudes playfulness, it is rooted in precision and meticulous planning, ensuring a harmonious balance between order and spontaneity. Terry noted that the space embodies the essence of its client, an effortlessly cool individual, making it an inviting place for collaboration and conversation. 'Innovation does not always come from new technologies,' the designers concluded, 'but from reimagining familiar concepts in unexpected ways.'
