Fukui Prefecture Faces Severe Rainfall Alerts

This Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its highest-level alert, a Level 5 emergency warning, for heavy rain across three cities in Fukui Prefecture: Fukui, Ono, and Katsuyama. The warning highlights the escalating threats of landslides and flash floods.

As conditions worsened, the JMA later downgraded the warning to Level 4. Takuya Hosomi, a JMA official, attributed the severe weather to warm, humid air from the south interacting with a rain front, resulting in the formation of cumulonimbus clouds that produce intense rainstorms.

Since Saturday night, some regions have experienced extraordinary rainfall rates of 50 to 60 millimeters per hour. Katsuyama recorded an astonishing 300 mm of rain in just 24 hours, while Ono saw 233 mm, both breaking previous records.
