Fukushima Soil Reuse Initiative Expands to Regional Cities

The Japanese government has announced plans to repurpose soil from decontamination efforts linked to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. This initiative marks a significant move, as it will be the first time this soil is used outside of Tokyo.

At a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office, officials decided to kick off the reuse program focusing initially on flowerbeds in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, and Saitama. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara emphasized that this effort is vital for achieving the government's target of final soil disposal by March 2045.

Currently, around 14 million cubic meters of soil, primarily low in radiation, are held in interim facilities in Okuma and Futaba. The government aims to utilize approximately 75% of this soil for public works, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and safety in the process.
