Tensions Rise as Russia Issues Warning to Denmark Over Baltic Incident

Moscow has issued a stern warning to Denmark following a close encounter in the Baltic Sea, where a Russian frigate's flares narrowly missed a Danish military helicopter. The incident has sparked accusations of recklessness between the two nations.
Vladimir Barbin, Russia's ambassador in Copenhagen, labeled the Danish helicopter's maneuvers as 'dangerous' and 'provocative.' He expressed his concerns through a formal diplomatic note, demanding measures to prevent any similar occurrences in the future. The Russian diplomat criticized Denmark's attempts to downplay the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that the actions raised significant concerns about the possible repercussions of such recklessness.
The Danish defence command reported that the Fennec helicopter was on a routine mission to photograph the Russian frigate operating in international waters when the incident occurred. Denmark’s Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus stated that one of the flares passed alarmingly close to the helicopter, describing Russia's actions as 'deeply unprofessional seamanship.' While the Danish government is taking the matter seriously, Bruus indicated that invoking Article 5 of NATO—a measure that considers an attack on one member an attack on all—is not currently on the table.
