Ghent University Allows Accused Academic to Resume Work Amid Ongoing Inquiry

Ghent University has announced that Nathan Cofnas, the American academic who accused the late Jason Arday of plagiarism, is permitted to return to select academic responsibilities while an investigation continues.

Arday, who tragically passed away at 41 shortly after resigning from Cambridge University, had denied the plagiarism allegations but admitted to making mistakes. His death has sparked widespread discussions about racism within British academia.

Cofnas was initially suspended by Ghent University as a precaution during the inquiry, which he claims is also examining potential discrimination. The university has now lifted certain restrictions, allowing him to work remotely, though he is barred from teaching.

Following his suspension, Cofnas expressed gratitude to U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, Bill White, for his support. His controversial blog posts had previously led to Emmanuel College severing ties with him amid student concerns.

A vigil for Arday attracted thousands last week, highlighting the intense scrutiny he faced and the implications of media narratives on his life.
