Hope Amidst Tragedy: Six South Africans Missing After Nepal-Tibet Floods

As the search continues for six South Africans missing in the aftermath of devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet, families remain hopeful yet anxious. Among them is Linda Govender, whose daughter Terricia, 33, from Isipingo Beach in KwaZulu-Natal, was last known to be on a pilgrimage with the Isha Foundation when tragedy struck.

The catastrophic floods, which began on August 26, have claimed over 500 lives and left nearly 1,000 people unaccounted for. Terricia was celebrating her birthday just days before the disaster, having met spiritual leader Sadhguru on her journey back from Mount Kailash.

Linda Govender spoke with palpable emotion about her last conversation with her daughter, which took place shortly before the floods. They spent hours video calling, discussing shopping plans and sharing moments despite the distance. However, as news of the floods unfolded, Linda's worry grew when she received an ominous email from the Isha Foundation, confirming her worst fears.

“When I opened that email, I knew it was bad news. Terricia was in trouble,” Linda recounted, her voice trembling with emotion. She described the overwhelming footage of the floods circulating on social media, which only deepened her family's anxiety as they waited for updates.

The six missing individuals include not only Terricia but also a couple, Vivaganathan and Janet Pillay, both 66 and 56 years old, as well as another couple, Surendranath and Anitha Devi Maharaj, aged 74 and 67. They were all traveling in the same region when the floods occurred. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has yet to comment on the situation.

Gift of the Givers, the organization that has been closely monitoring the situation, has released the names of those missing and is prepared to assist in rescue efforts. They have set up contact information for relatives of the missing persons, urging anyone with information to reach out.

As rescue operations continue, the Nepalese authorities have resumed their efforts after a temporary halt due to fears of further flooding. Although some rescue teams have reached the hardest-hit areas, there have been no reports of South Africans being found among those rescued so far.

Linda remains steadfast in her belief that her daughter will survive, describing Terricia as a strong and resourceful person. “I’m just praying and hoping that my daughter comes home,” she said. The family plans to travel to Nepal, awaiting stabilization of conditions before making the journey.
