Government Clamps Down on Personal Baggage Scheme for Vehicle Imports

The Pakistani government has officially discontinued the Personal Baggage Scheme for importing used vehicles, as announced by Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan. This decision, approved by the Economic Coordination Committee and the federal cabinet, aims to eliminate misuse for commercial purposes.
Responding to queries during a National Assembly session, Khan noted that the Gift and Transfer of Residence schemes would remain in place but with stricter regulations. Notably, the revised policy stipulates that vehicles imported under these schemes must now comply with safety and environmental standards akin to those for commercial imports.
Additionally, the time frame for importing vehicles has been extended from two years to three years, and the minimum stay requirement for overseas Pakistanis has been increased to three years with at least 850 cumulative days abroad. The policy changes also ensure that vehicles will be non-transferable for one year. These adjustments aim to assist genuine users while curbing potential abuses.
