Japan to Enhance Language Portal for Foreign Students

In a bid to support the growing number of foreign children learning Japanese, Japan's education ministry will revamp its educational portal, Castanet, by fiscal 2027. This site currently helps users locate Japanese learning resources and will soon expand its offerings.
Set to launch in April, the updated portal will feature multilingual support, including Chinese and Portuguese, making it accessible to a wider audience. The educational materials will also be tailored to different proficiency levels, allowing for a more personalized learning experience.
The ministry's initiative comes as the demand for Japanese language instruction surges, with a record 84,759 students in need reported in fiscal 2025. This enhancement aims not only to improve resources for students but also to assist teachers who may lack experience in instructing foreign learners.
