Government Takes Action After Tragic Fire at PIMS Claims Lives of Infants

In the wake of a devastating fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) that resulted in the loss of 14 infants, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the suspension of eight officials and the initiation of criminal proceedings against them. This decision came during a high-level meeting held in Lahore on Saturday.

Health Minister Mustafa Kamal, alongside Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, visited PIMS to meet with grieving families and to offer condolences on behalf of the government. "This is an extremely tragic and heartbreaking incident that cannot be adequately expressed in words," Kamal stated, emphasizing the profound sorrow experienced by the affected families.

The fire broke out early Wednesday morning, reportedly triggered by a spark in the nursery, which quickly escalated due to oxygen points connected to incubators. Despite attempts by on-duty medical staff to manage the situation, witnesses described chaos, with claims that emergency services were delayed, forcing some to break windows to assist victims. The government, however, has disputed these allegations of negligence.

During their visit, the ministers discussed the circumstances surrounding the incident and the ongoing inquiry led by a committee appointed by the Prime Minister. Kamal affirmed the commitment to a thorough investigation, stating, "Strict action will be taken against those found responsible for this tragic incident." He stressed the importance of implementing the inquiry committee's recommendations to prevent future occurrences.

In a gesture of support, the government has pledged compensation of Rs5 million to each affected family. However, Kamal acknowledged that no amount of money could replace the lost lives, stating, "This financial assistance can in no way compensate for their loss. It is a gesture to stand by the families and share in their responsibility."

The tragedy has ignited public outrage, prompting calls for a wider investigation into the health sector's management and safety protocols. Kamal referred to the health system as "rotten," suggesting that reforms are necessary to avert similar tragedies in the future. The Senate has unanimously passed a resolution demanding a special committee to investigate the fire, while the National Assembly has echoed calls for accountability.
