HMS Bulwark Transitions to Brazilian Navy as UK Enhances Amphibious Fleet

By Editor • August 29, 2026 • 1 min read

The Royal Navy bids farewell to HMS Bulwark, selling the amphibious assault ship to the Brazilian Navy after over 20 years of service. Commissioned in 2005, Bulwark played a pivotal role in global missions, including humanitarian efforts and multinational exercises.

This move comes as part of the UK's focus on modernizing its amphibious capabilities, confirmed by a £2.4 billion maritime partnership with the Netherlands to develop a new fleet of amphibious transport ships. These vessels will be constructed in UK shipyards and are designed to sustain hundreds of skilled jobs.

Lord Coaker, Minister of State for Defence, praised Bulwark's distinguished service and expressed optimism about future collaborations. The new fleet will feature advanced capabilities, including the operation of drones and autonomous systems, supporting NATO and enhancing the operational readiness of both the UK and Dutch forces.
