Hope Lodge: A Scenic Retreat in the Heart of the Scottish Highlands

In the enchanting Scottish Highlands, a new gem has emerged: Hope Lodge, a stunning retreat that marries historical charm with a commitment to environmental conservation. Once a shooting lodge for the 3rd Duke of Sutherland, Hope has undergone a thoughtful transformation, allowing it to stand as a testament to both luxury and nature.

WildLand, an organization founded by Danish entrepreneur Anders Holch Povlsen, has spearheaded this restoration with a vision that spans 200 years. Their efforts have resulted in a vast conservation area exceeding 222,000 acres and the planting of over six million trees in just over a decade. Hope Lodge promises guests an immersive experience within its rewilded surroundings, all while maintaining a quaint homeliness.

As I arrived at Hope on a picturesque day in May, I was greeted by the looming presence of Ben Hope, its mist-clad peak creating a dramatic backdrop. The lodge itself, with its Scots-Baronial architecture, radiated warmth, especially as rain began to fall, inviting me inside to a cozy atmosphere complete with crackling fires and the aroma of tea paired with homemade shortbread.

Hope offers a total of seven rooms, each designed for comfort and relaxation. Furnished with vintage four-poster beds and luxurious linens, the rooms reflect the natural beauty of the Highlands through their color palettes and decor. Each evening includes a thoughtful turndown service, complete with hot-water bottles and herbal teas, enhancing the lodge's welcoming ambiance.

The lodge’s laid-back atmosphere is a far cry from the formalities of its past. Guests are encouraged to indulge in treats from The Butler’s Pantry and enjoy a selection of whiskies in The Billiards Room, all while being attended to by a team of knowledgeable staff who embody the essence of hospitality. Their ability to recall personal details, such as my preferred Wellington boot size, showcased their dedication to guest experience.

During my stay, I savored a delightful dinner featuring locally sourced ingredients, including roast chicken and foraged mushrooms. The lodge’s design reflects a blend of historical preservation and modern aesthetics, overseen by Cécile & Boyd, the same firm known for their work on luxury safari lodges. Original features of the lodge have been retained where possible, creating a harmonious balance between old and new.

Nature itself is a key player at Hope, with expansive glass walls in communal areas bringing the outside in, while a foraged-heather chandelier adds a distinct local touch. The grounds, designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, are a lush tapestry of native flora, providing a vibrant setting for guests to explore.

Beyond the lodge, outdoor adventures await. The Clachlan, a new facility designed by Gras, serves as the starting point for various activities ranging from paddleboarding to off-road excursions. Each morning begins with a conservation briefing, allowing guests to engage with the environment in meaningful ways.

One of the most enriching experiences is participating in themed itineraries that connect guests with the natural elements. For instance, a day centered around water includes invigorating plunges in the loch, followed by hikes up Ben Hope, where guides share insights on the region's ecology and wildlife. Picnicking beneath waterfalls while surrounded by the rich Scottish landscape epitomizes the retreat's unique offerings.

Dining experiences at Hope also celebrate the local landscape, with menus featuring seafood and seasonal produce. From langoustines grilled over an open fire to freshly baked bread served with soup, every meal reflects the bounty of the Highlands.
