Hungry Lion Falls Victim to Ransomware Attack Amid Escalating Cyber Threats

The South African fast-food chain Hungry Lion has become the latest target in a worrying trend of increasing cyberattacks, with the MeduzaLocker ransomware group demanding a ransom of $50,000.

This breach highlights the alarming vulnerability of corporate networks, as it follows a similar attack on logistics company The Courier Guy, also orchestrated by the same threat group. Hungry Lion operates over 111 outlets across multiple African countries, including South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia.

Threat intelligence specialists, Dark Notify, have analyzed the breach and reported that while the incident is serious, it appears that no personally identifiable information (PII) was compromised. Instead, the leak involves structural outputs from the Point of Sale (POS) systems, which underscores the weaknesses present in localized branch-level data management.

The timing of this breach is particularly concerning as South Africa is currently undergoing an 18-month mutual evaluation process to assess its financial systems' integrity. With the country having recently been removed from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, a resurgence of data breaches could jeopardize this status.

Experts warn that the rise in data breaches, including those affecting Hungry Lion and others like Standard Bank and Liberty, poses a significant risk to the financial credibility of South Africa. Check Point’s local head of security consulting, Hendrik de Bruin, emphasizes that cyber resilience is now a critical component of financial stability, rather than merely an IT concern.
