Tragic Loss of Beluga Whale Peekachu After Rescue from Marineland

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Peekachu, a 23-year-old female beluga whale, has passed away just days after her relocation to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago from Canada’s Marineland. The aquarium announced her unexpected death occurred while staff were attempting to provide rehydration therapy.
Pekachu was one of eight belugas transferred as part of efforts to rehome the last captive whales from the now-closed Ontario facility. Despite being blind in one eye and smaller than her peers, she adapted well to her new environment and engaged socially with other whales.
Her death adds to the somber record of Marineland, where 20 whales, including 19 belugas, have died since 2019. The Canadian government had sanctioned the transfer of these animals to various facilities, including the Shedd Aquarium, following Marineland's permanent closure in 2024.
Officials confirmed they would release a necropsy report on Peekachu as soon as it becomes available. The aquarium expressed their sorrow, stating she left a lasting impression on all who met her.
