I Love Lucy to Be Honored with Television Academy's First Legacy Award

The Television Academy has announced that the iconic sitcom "I Love Lucy" will be the first recipient of its newly established Legacy Award, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

This award recognizes a television program that has made a significant, lasting impact on audiences and society. The honor will be highlighted during a special tribute at the Creative Arts Emmys on September 6, 2023.

Cris Abrego, the chair of the Television Academy, praised the show for its groundbreaking influence, stating, "I Love Lucy truly helped define what television could be." The series, co-created by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, has set a lasting blueprint for the industry with its creative ambition and technical innovations.

The selection of the Legacy Award recipient was made by the Academy’s Board of Governors, following recommendations from its Special Awards Committee. Leading up to the award, a live script reading and panel discussion featuring current Emmy nominees was held to celebrate the show's anniversary.
