Iceland Votes Against Renewing EU Membership Talks

Icelandic citizens have decisively rejected a proposal to restart negotiations for European Union membership, marking a significant moment in the ongoing debate over the nation’s future relationship with Europe. In a referendum held on August 29, 2026, the measure was defeated with 52.8% voting against and 47.2% in favor, according to national broadcaster RUV.

Only in Reykjavik, the capital, did a majority support the proposal among the country’s 400,000 residents. The government’s decision to expedite the vote followed remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland, which prompted some to seek closer ties with Europe for enhanced security.

The referendum posed a straightforward question to approximately 265,000 eligible voters: Should Iceland resume discussions to join the EU? Initial results showed the “Yes” camp leading, but as more ballots were counted, particularly from areas with less support for EU membership, the opposition pulled ahead.

Opponents of the proposal emphasized the benefits of existing arrangements with the EU, such as access to the single market and Schengen area, while supporters argued that EU membership could bring economic stability and help address transnational issues like climate change.
