In a significant move to enhance security collaboration, India and Japan formalized their defense ties during a meeting between Defense Ministers Shinjiro Koizumi and Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. The two nations signed a memorandum focused on maritime security cooperation, as outlined in a joint statement.
As members of the Quad alliance alongside the U.S. and Australia, India and Japan aim to counterbalance China's influence in the Indian Ocean and the broader Asia-Pacific region. The ministers emphasized their dedication to fostering deeper defense cooperation to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Additionally, India expressed interest in leveraging Japan's technological expertise to boost its domestic military industry, particularly in naval shipbuilding and design under the “Make in India” initiative. This collaboration follows previous discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, on addressing challenges like China’s dominance in critical minerals.
