Infantino Attends Caribbean Youth Tournament Amid Controversy

FIFA President Gianni Infantino made headlines over the weekend by attending an Under-14 soccer tournament in the Dominican Republic, despite a request from FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani for him to stay away. Montagliani, who leads the CONCACAF soccer body, expressed concerns that Infantino's presence would distract from the event due to ongoing scrutiny surrounding his controversial proposal to sell future World Cup profits to private investors.
In a letter addressed to Infantino, Montagliani warned that the media's focus on the FIFA governance crisis could overshadow the technical aspects of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) youth competition. “In the name of football, I respectfully ask you to reconsider your attendance,” Montagliani stated, highlighting the importance of the tournament for youth development.
Despite these concerns, Infantino shared updates from the tournament on his Instagram account, showcasing meetings with local officials. This comes at a time when Infantino's leadership has faced significant backlash, particularly after he withdrew the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal on August 1, following intense criticism from within and outside the organization.
As Infantino prepares for the FIFA election congress in March 2024, where he aims for a fourth term, he continues to navigate a landscape of dissent, including calls for an end to his executive presidency from several FIFA vice presidents.
