Influencers: The New Faces of Marketing Strategy at Cannes Lions 2026

By Editor • August 24, 2026 • 3 min read

As the Cannes Lions festival continues to evolve, a notable shift has emerged within its traditionally corporate milieu. Influencers have stepped into a significant role, not just as content creators but as strategic partners in marketing, transforming the dynamics of brand engagement.

In 2026, influencers took center stage at this renowned festival, participating in discussions and networking events along the iconic Croisette. This year's festival highlighted how creators are becoming integral to the brand narrative, moving beyond the role of mere promoters. Shana Davis, founder of the influencer marketing agency Ponte Firm, notes that the influencer's role has drastically changed, emphasizing their importance as part of a brand's core strategy rather than as an ancillary element.

Caroline Wilson of UTA's brand advisory group describes creators as “a marketing strategy” in themselves, indicating a paradigm shift in how brands perceive these individuals. Nikita Walia, strategy director at Unnamed, echoes this sentiment, asserting that influencers now function as businesspeople who understand their audience and contribute meaningfully to brand strategies. The relationship between brands and creators is evolving, with brands increasingly seeking input from influencers on what content should be produced.

For many creators, this marks a significant departure from their comfort zones. TikTok star Brandon Edelman, known as Bran Flakezz, expressed his amazement at Cannes Lions, likening it to “Spring Break for your boss’s boss.” He emphasized the need for brands to engage creators in a two-way dialogue, where influencers can share insights about what works and what doesn’t in marketing strategies. This collaborative approach is becoming more common, with brands recognizing the need for creator insights beyond just content creation.

Major brands like Coach and Laura Mercier have begun to harness the expertise of influencers in innovative ways. Coach introduced &Coach, a collaborative content series featuring Gen Z creators, while Laura Mercier launched The Laura Mercier Collective, aiming to leverage creator insights for internal consulting. Such initiatives signal a growing recognition of the value creators bring to the product development process, particularly in understanding market trends and audience preferences.

Despite this progress, the transition to a more strategic role poses challenges for many influencers who may not be equipped with the necessary business acumen. Experts caution that while brands are beginning to grant creators more creative freedom, they often still rely on them primarily during the execution phase rather than involving them in the strategy from the outset. UTA’s Wilson highlights the importance of incorporating a creator's audience insights into the planning stage to avoid missing the mark in marketing campaigns.

The discussion at Cannes Lions reflected a broader acknowledgment of the unique perspectives creators offer. Their proximity to audiences allows them to spot shifts in trends and preferences that brands may overlook. However, many creators reported feeling out of place amid the business-focused atmosphere. Experts argue that while it's not essential for creators to fully embrace the traditional corporate language, there is a need for brands to support them better. Ben Harms, chief growth officer at Archrival, stresses that inviting creators to business conferences should come with the necessary briefing to empower them as partners, rather than mere participants.

As the influencer marketing landscape continues to evolve, it remains clear that not every creator will gravitate towards these new strategic responsibilities. Some, like influencer Luciana Fuller, recognize the potential value of being involved earlier in campaign processes, which can lead to more relatable and engaging content for their audiences. The future of influencer marketing will likely hinge on balancing creative freedom with strategic insight, ensuring that both creators and brands can thrive in this rapidly changing environment.
