Innovative Cargo Tricycle Designed for Kenyan Banana Farmers

In a bold move to tackle the often-overlooked "first mile" logistics challenge, four industrial design students from the University of Bologna have unveiled ATTA, a cargo tricycle equipped with a built-in forklift. Targeted at banana farmers in rural Kenya, this human-powered vehicle aims to ease the burdens of transporting heavy harvests across uneven terrains.
Named after the leafcutter ant, which is known for its ability to carry loads much heavier than itself, ATTA reflects a philosophy of optimization and practicality. Designers Irene Ponteduro, Edoardo Govoni, Filippo Murotti, and Matteo Marinaro meticulously crafted a solution that is not only user-friendly but also locally maintainable—steering clear of complex, tech-heavy designs that would be impractical for smallholder farmers.
The need for such an innovation is pressing; banana harvesting in Kenya often results in bruised fruit due to the strenuous process of transporting heavy bunches without adequate infrastructure. This inefficiency can significantly impact the farmers’ profitability. ATTA's stable cargo frame combined with its integrated forklift system minimizes damage during loading and unloading, allowing farmers to preserve their produce’s quality and, by extension, their income.
ATTA's design philosophy serves as a reminder that effective solutions do not always need to be grandiose or technologically advanced. Instead, the focus should be on what truly addresses the needs of those it is intended to serve. By prioritizing the realities of rural logistics, the team has created a practical tool that could transform the livelihoods of farmers facing daily challenges.
