Innovative Open-Air Gallery Burrows Beneath Los Cabos

In a striking architectural feat, Arte Abierto Baja descends four meters below the bustling Ánima Village in Los Cabos, Mexico. Designed by Sordo Madaleno, this 180-square-meter open-air gallery invites visitors to experience large-scale sculptures and site-specific installations in a unique subterranean setting.

The journey begins with a 17-meter ramp that leads visitors into the gallery, creating a dramatic transition from the vibrant plaza above to the tranquil space below. The gallery's walls, reaching over five meters high, provide an enclosed environment that enhances the impact of the artworks while maintaining an inviting openness to the sky. Architect Fernando Sordo Madaleno describes this design as a movement from "compression to exposure," allowing the surrounding landscape to blend seamlessly with the exhibited pieces.

Constructed with pigmented bush-hammered concrete, the gallery's tactile surfaces harmonize with the rugged Baja terrain, grounding the structure within its desert context. The inaugural installation features renowned Mexican artist Abraham Cruzvillegas, known for his use of found materials and improvisational methods, further enriching the gallery's artistic narrative.
