A tragic incident in rural Darwin has led to a death in custody investigation following the death of a 43-year-old man who was involved in a police pursuit. Acting Assistant Commissioner Peter Malley described the events as "confronting and traumatic," emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

The man, who had stolen two vehicles, reportedly engaged in a confrontation with police near the Stuart Highway. After abandoning one vehicle at Acacia Quarry, he fled on foot but tragically self-harmed when confronted by officers. Despite efforts to assist him, including the deployment of a taser to prevent further harm, he was declared dead at the scene.

Malley expressed his support for the officers involved, who are now receiving welfare assistance. The investigation into the circumstances of the incident is being conducted with oversight from the professional standards command. Residents in the area have expressed their shock, especially those whose property was impacted by the vehicle thefts.
