Iran Launches Retaliatory Strikes Against US Military in Jordan Amid Escalating Tensions

By Editor • August 31, 2026 • 1 min read

In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Iran launched ballistic missile strikes on US military bases in Jordan on Monday, marking a sharp response to recent American attacks within Iranian territory. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) reported significant damage to the targets, while the Jordanian military confirmed that it intercepted eight missiles, although they did not disclose their origin.

This military exchange follows a US strike on Iranian rocket launchers located on Larak Island in the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. The US Central Command (Centcom) described the operation as a precautionary measure to thwart imminent threats posed by Iranian forces.

The IRGC claimed their retaliatory attacks were a direct response to what they termed “US-Zionist aerial aggression,” indicating the deepening rift between the two nations. The recent hostilities come at a time when the ongoing war between the US and Iran has reached a six-month milestone, with previous weeks showing a lull in fighting.

Economic strategies have gained prominence over military action for the Trump administration, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announcing plans for new sanctions aimed primarily at Iranian banks. Bessent emphasized the urgency of cutting financial ties to Iran's regime, suggesting that further sanctions would be introduced weekly.

While diplomatic efforts have been made to resolve the conflict, including a ceasefire agreement in April, sporadic violence has continued, primarily in the Strait of Hormuz. The US has maintained a naval blockade to pressure Iran, contributing to rising global oil prices, with Brent crude surpassing $90 a barrel following the latest developments.

The American public's discontent with the ongoing war is palpable, especially with midterm elections approaching. Critics, including Senator Jack Reed, have voiced concerns over the lack of clear objectives, highlighting a perceived weakening of the US's position in the Middle East.
