James Maddison Finds Family Strength Amid Injury Struggles

In an engaging interview set to air on BBC One, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison opened up about his challenging journey over the past year, which included a serious knee injury and the arrival of his second set of twins.
Having been sidelined for most of the 2025-26 season due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, Maddison described the experience as the "toughest year of his life." The 29-year-old reflected on how becoming a father for the fifth time and supporting his partner during her pregnancy provided a much-needed distraction from his injury woes. “I needed that positive distraction of my partner being pregnant,” he shared, noting the chaos of managing five kids under four while recovering.
Maddison expressed concern about the time missed with his family, especially with his eldest son, Leo, who struggled to remember attending games because of Maddison's lengthy absence. “He couldn’t even remember over a year ago when he was at all the games,” Maddison lamented. He looked forward to the day when Leo could witness him play again, rather than just seeing him at home with a knee machine.
Returning to the pitch against Leeds in May after 375 days out, Maddison felt a mix of relief and frustration watching his team struggle without him. He commented on the challenges the squad faced creatively and how he wished to contribute. Despite those setbacks, he praised new head coach Roberto de Zerbi for revitalizing the team's spirit since taking over in March. Maddison appreciated De Zerbi’s approach of fostering a love for the game, which included a team meal where players were encouraged to relax and bond.
As the new season approaches, Maddison remains optimistic about his fitness and impact. “I’m working so hard to try and be fully fit and available for the majority of the season,” he stated confidently. With his sights set on a healthy season, Maddison is eager to showcase his abilities on the field, believing he can significantly influence games if he stays injury-free.
