Violent Attack at Edmonton Gurdwara Leaves Two Injured, Suspect in Custody

A disturbing incident at the Nanaksar Sikh Gurdwara in northeast Edmonton has left two men injured after a 27-year-old man launched a violent attack using a screwdriver. The assault occurred early Friday morning, August 21, 2026, when the suspect attempted to enter the prayer area of the gurdwara.

Upon being confronted by the staff, the situation escalated. The injured include a 75-year-old priest and a 51-year-old volunteer, both of whom were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect also sustained injuries during the incident and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Witnesses played a crucial role by intervening and detaining the suspect until the police arrived. Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is now investigating the attack, exploring the possibility that it was motivated by hate. The suspect, who has a prior history of violent offenses dating back to 2015, had been released from a federal prison just a day before the attack and had failed to report to a halfway house.

Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the Sikh community and emphasizing that places of worship should be safe havens. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also criticized the violence, urging federal reforms to bail and parole laws to ensure community safety.

The vice-president of the gurdwara, Zora Grewal, noted that while no Sikh scriptures were harmed, the emotional impact on the community is significant. EPS Chief Warren Driechel affirmed that while the injuries were not life-threatening, the level of violence is unacceptable in Edmonton.

In light of this incident, the World Sikh Organization of Canada is calling for gurdwaras across the country to enhance their security measures. This violent episode follows earlier threats received by two Sikh temples in Alberta, indicating a potential rise in targeted violence against the community.
