Japanese Men Embrace Hair Removal to Beat the Summer Heat

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

As summer temperatures soar in Japan, more men are flocking to grooming clinics to undergo hair removal treatments in hopes of finding relief from the oppressive heat. Yuki Kubo, a 24-year-old office worker, recently completed his fourth leg treatment at a Tokyo clinic, stating that hair removal has made him feel cleaner and more comfortable.

Once dominated by facial hair removal, the Gorilla Clinic, with 23 locations across Japan, is witnessing a growing demand for body hair treatments, according to director Hiroyuki Ota. This shift reflects changing attitudes as men increasingly embrace wearing shorts, a style once reserved for children.

Amidst record-breaking summer heat, reaching an unprecedented 41.8 degrees Celsius last year, even the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has encouraged lighter clothing to combat the sweltering conditions. A recent survey revealed that over 25% of men sought lower-leg hair removal services, making appointment availability a challenge at popular clinics like the one in Ginza.
