Jens Lien's 'Joe's Assignment' Explores Automation and Human Connection

Renowned Norwegian director Jens Lien is set to captivate audiences once again with his latest film, "Joe's Assignment," which delves into the implications of automation on human existence. Featuring Trond Fausa Aurvåg from "Lilyhammer," this Norway-Greece co-production is currently in post-production, with a completion date expected by October.

Showcased at the New Nordic Films festival in Haugesund, the film tackles the pressing contemporary issue of work redundancy in a society increasingly reliant on technology. Aurvåg plays the title character, Joe, an ambulance driver who finds himself jobless due to the rise of self-driving vehicles. As he navigates a bureaucratic system designed to assign tasks to the unemployed, Joe discovers his own assignment has been lost within the government machinery.

According to Lien, the film is not dystopian but rather a humorous exploration of a future where human purpose is questioned. “There’s something both intriguing and frightening about robots and automated processes operating without human involvement,” he commented. The film aims to address the absurdity of striving for a future where humans make themselves obsolete.

Producer Kristin Emblem highlighted the film's warmth, emphasizing its focus on human kindness and relationships amidst the chaos of automation. Clips presented at the festival showcased Joe's encounters as he searches for meaning and connection, emphasizing themes of intimacy and belonging.

While "Joe's Assignment" shares thematic elements with Lien's earlier work, "The Bothersome Man," he notes that this new project diverges stylistically. Nonetheless, both films exhibit a unique sense of humor and a tonal affinity that engages viewers in a thoughtful reflection on society.

With a supporting cast that includes Agnes Kittelsen and Alba August, and a screenplay by Per Schreiner, Lien’s latest endeavor continues his exploration of social systems and personal alienation. The film is slated for a Norwegian premiere in 2027, following an anticipated international festival run.
