Joe Root Calls for Strong Leadership Ahead of New Era for England Test Team

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

As England's Test cricket team gears up for a fresh start with Joe Root back at the helm, the captain is urging his teammates to embody positive role models both on and off the field.

Root, who previously captained the team between 2017 and 2022, takes charge once again following a turbulent summer that saw England suffer a series of setbacks, including the retirement of Ben Stokes and the dismissal of coach Brendon McCullum. The first Test against Pakistan at Headingley marks the beginning of this new chapter.

Reflecting on the challenges faced, Root stated, "You always want to represent your country in the best possible light… We might have fallen short of that on a few occasions in the recent past." He emphasized the importance of being good human beings, highlighting a need for stronger performances and better conduct.

With his extensive experience from 166 Tests, Root aims to instill a calming presence within the squad, especially after off-field controversies plagued the team in previous months. The pressure is on, as he noted one of his key challenges will be to establish his own identity separate from Stokes, who was known for his aggressive style.

For the upcoming match, England's lineup remains tentative, with Root hinting at bringing in Surrey's Dan Lawrence to fill Stokes' role. Meanwhile, Pakistan's captain Babar Azam will miss the match due to injury.
