New York City, a vibrant hub of culture and innovation, is now home to the Jordan Design Studio, a platform designed to empower emerging creatives. This initiative aims to harness the city's dynamic spirit, inviting designers to reinterpret the iconic Air Jordan 1 sneaker.
The Jordan Brand, renowned for its connection to basketball legend Michael Jordan, has shifted its focus from Los Angeles and Chicago to NYC, eager to tap into the city's unique creative energy. For three intense days, eight talented individuals were challenged to infuse their personal aesthetics into the legendary sneaker, resulting in a fusion of innovation and tradition.
Leading this creative endeavor is Angelo Baque, founder of Awake NY, who alongside Jordan’s design team, guided the participants through this transformative experience. The objective was not to completely overhaul the classic design but to allow each designer’s individuality to shine through in their interpretations.
Among the participants, Alaia Ryan emerged as the standout winner. A multifaceted designer and founder of Nayr Studio, Ryan is celebrated for her distinctive heart-shaped bags and innovative use of materials. She manages her production in New York City and aims to expand her brand into ready-to-wear fashion.
Other noteworthy participants include Sim and Rivers, a creative duo with deep roots in archival fashion. Sim, a curator from Sugar Hill, Harlem, has branched into various roles including model and cultural programmer, while Rivers combines his storytelling skills with a passion for fashion to reshape the sneaker's design.
Julian Michel Eversley, whose diverse heritage influences his work, brings his background in product design and cobbling to the project. Similarly, Iman Abdul-Rassoul draws on her multicultural upbringing to create designs that celebrate her Puerto Rican and Lebanese roots.
Another creative talent, Robert Owasu, known as THIIIRD, combines his Ghanaian-American heritage with a multidisciplinary approach to art and design. JJ Grant, rooted in Black and Puerto Rican culture, creates wearable art that honors her community through her platform, I SEE ME.
Yeddifer Fermin, also known as THE FERM, challenges traditional art boundaries with her immersive installations, while Justin Blanco leverages over 15 years of design experience to bring his unique NYC perspective to the project.
As the competition progresses, each of these unique voices will be considered for the global finale in Shanghai, where one design will be selected to join the prestigious ranks of Air Jordan silhouettes. The Jordan Design Studio not only fosters creativity but also reflects the relentless pursuit of greatness that defines New York City.
