Judge Seeks Immediate Clarity on Argentina's Road Fund Usage

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 1 min read

In a notable legal development, Federal Judge Ernesto Kreplak, based in La Plata, has initiated a class action lawsuit demanding urgent reports from Argentina's Ministry of Economy, the National Roads Directorate, and Banco Nación concerning the Integrated Road System (SisVial) trust fund.

Investigations by the newspaper La Nación revealed that between January 2024 and May 2026, the SisVial fund received over 1.5 trillion pesos, yet only 26.2% was utilized for actual road construction and maintenance. As of May 31, the fund reportedly retained over one trillion pesos in government bonds and deposits, with execution rates of merely 11.3% for 2024 and 39% for 2025.

Lawmaker Victoria Tolosa Paz, who initiated the class action and a criminal complaint, criticized the government for misallocating funds meant for roadworks, claiming that three-quarters of the SisVial income was diverted to financial investments instead. Meanwhile, presidential spokesman Adrián Ravier maintained that there has been no misuse of funds, emphasizing a shift to private investment for highway financing.
