Karmelo Anthony's New Trial Request Rejected in High-Profile Murder Case

By Editor • August 23, 2026 • 1 min read

A Texas judge has denied a motion for a new trial for Karmelo Anthony, who was convicted of murdering 17-year-old track star Austin Metcalf. This ruling came after a two-day hearing near Dallas.

Judge Michael Chitty issued the decision on Saturday, affirming Anthony’s 35-year prison sentence for the April 2025 stabbing. The judge's brief order provided no further details, prompting Anthony's attorney, Russell Wilson, to announce plans to appeal.

District Attorney Greg Willis expressed confidence in the original trial's fairness, emphasizing the integrity of the jury's verdict. The case garnered national attention, partly due to its racial dynamics; however, both defense and prosecution insisted that race did not play a role in the trial.

Anthony's legal team had argued that the trial judge's stringent courtroom rules limited public access to proceedings, suggesting this warranted a retrial. Nonetheless, the judge stood by his rules, maintaining that they were essential for a fair trial.
