Tooro Kingdom Mourns as King Oyo Laid to Rest Amid Succession Controversy

In a solemn ceremony on September 12, 2026, the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda bid farewell to its late king, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who was once celebrated as the world’s youngest monarch. The procession, marked by royal guards in orange tunics, saw the casket adorned with the blue-and-yellow Tooro flag transported from the royal palace to St. John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal, where hundreds gathered to pay their respects.

King Oyo passed away at the age of 34 in the United States after battling cancer. He ascended the throne at just three years old back in 1995, capturing the hearts of many with his youthful reign. Following his death, a succession battle erupted within the royal family, as differing claims about the rightful heir emerged.

Succession Battle Unfolds

As the kingdom mourned, the royal family faced turmoil over the next king. A committee announced the selection of Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a cousin of the late king and a prominent figure in Ugandan media, to assume the throne. However, this choice was contested by Oyo's immediate family, who insisted that his previously unknown son should inherit the royal title, as indicated in the late king's will.

Supporters of Kijanangoma’s claim argued that Oyo’s family had failed to provide substantial evidence regarding the existence of this alleged son, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the succession. On September 11, Ugandan authorities reportedly backed Kijanangoma's claim, intensifying the scrutiny surrounding the royal lineage.

Final Rites and Legacy

The burial ceremony will take place in accordance with traditional customs, where the Omusuna, the chief priest, will guide the new king in performing the ritual of casting nine coffee berries into the grave. This act symbolizes a connection to the predecessors of the Tooro Kingdom.

Oyo’s legacy extends beyond his royal duties; he was known for his humanitarian efforts as a UN goodwill ambassador and for fostering relationships with international figures, including former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. As the community reflects on the life of a beloved monarch, the future of the Tooro Kingdom remains uncertain amidst the ongoing succession dispute.
