Kushner Optimistic About Hamas Disarmament Timeline

By Editor • August 17, 2026 • 1 min read

Jared Kushner, the envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, expressed optimism on Monday regarding the disarmament of Hamas, suggesting that concrete steps could be taken within 30 days. Speaking from Tel Aviv after discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Kushner emphasized the potential for progress in dismantling Hamas's military capabilities.

Kushner noted that an American general would oversee the disarmament process, a crucial point for Netanyahu, who asserted that Israel would not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed. The discussions follow Kushner's direct talks with Hamas in Egypt, where the group signaled its commitment to a U.S.-backed peace plan.

According to an Israeli official, both sides agreed that no reconstruction efforts in Gaza would proceed until Hamas hands over its weapons for decommissioning. This plan is part of a broader roadmap established by Hamas on July 30, which includes supervision by the International Stabilisation Force led by U.S. Major General Jasper Jeffers.

Amid skepticism from Netanyahu, who is facing a difficult re-election campaign, Kushner highlighted that every weapon collected would be permanently decommissioned, ensuring they could not be reused. An official from Trump's 'Board of Peace' reiterated Israel's right to defend itself, particularly if Hamas resorts to violence or attempts to rearm.

Hamas, represented by its new leader Khalil al-Hayya, has expressed a desire for cooperation but also called for pressure on Netanyahu regarding the peace negotiations.
