Tensions Escalate as US and Iran Exchange Strikes in Strait of Hormuz

The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has escalated dramatically, with both nations trading strikes on ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This latest round of hostilities comes after a week of renewed conflict following a period of relative calm.
On Saturday, the US Central Command reported that it had targeted three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for attacks launched by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which included ballistic missiles aimed at two US Navy vessels. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, stated, "Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost — taking out three of yours." This exchange of fire marks a significant escalation in a conflict that has been simmering since the US and Israel's strikes on Iran earlier this year.
In response to the US strikes, the IRGC threatened to intensify its attacks against US military vessels in the region. Iranian state media claimed that they targeted three tankers that were allegedly on unauthorized routes and also hit three vessels linked to the US in other waters. Meanwhile, the US military dismissed claims that an unmanned American military boat had been struck by Iran, calling it a "total lie." This back-and-forth is indicative of the volatile situation as both nations seem poised for further confrontation.
