Lachlan Young Acquitted of Rape Charges Amid Murder Conviction

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 1 min read

Lachlan Young, a convicted murderer from Ballarat, has been acquitted of raping a teenager in a case that unfolded just months before he took the life of his girlfriend, Hannah McGuire. The verdict was delivered by a jury in County Court on Thursday, declaring Young, 24, not guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl on February 5, 2024, at a neighbor's property in Sebastopol.

The rape trial was conducted without the jury being informed of Young's murder conviction, which was kept under a suppression order until the verdict was announced. Young's legal team was meticulous in avoiding any mention of McGuire during the proceedings.

During the trial, Young took the stand to deny the accusations, asserting that the sexual activity ceased once he learned the complainant's age. The teenager, however, claimed that Young had forced her into intercourse, a claim she reported to police shortly before McGuire's murder, which occurred on April 2, 2024.

Young had pleaded not guilty initially but later changed his plea during his murder trial, admitting to a pattern of domestic violence that culminated in McGuire's tragic death. He is currently serving a sentence that will keep him incarcerated until at least August 2052, with the possibility of parole in 2046.
