Lawmakers Demand Inquiry into USS Lincoln's Deployment Conditions

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

Concerns are mounting among U.S. lawmakers regarding the conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, prompting calls for a thorough investigation. The aircraft carrier, which has been on an unprecedented deployment since November, is currently engaged in military operations in the Middle East, including actions related to the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran.

Having surpassed 260 days at sea without a port call, the USS Lincoln has set a new record for the longest deployment in U.S. Navy history. However, troubling reports have surfaced, including incidents of crew members attempting to jump overboard, attributed to shortages of food and essential supplies.

Representative Pat Ryan, alongside 22 colleagues, has reached out to acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao, highlighting that the lengthy deployments are becoming a concerning trend under the current administration. Ryan’s letter, dated August 14, also referenced similar issues reported on the USS Gerald Ford, which returned to the U.S. in April after a lengthy deployment.

California Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla, along with other Democratic senators, have also sent letters demanding accountability and answers from the Pentagon. They criticized the administration for what they described as poor planning and the ramifications of a protracted war with Iran. Their correspondence emphasized the serious consequences these deployments have on servicemembers.

As the USS Lincoln prepares for its return home, tensions remain high, especially with the USS George Washington being rerouted to replace it, leaving the Western Pacific without an aircraft carrier at a time of strategic concern for the U.S. President Trump has dismissed the troubling reports as exaggerated, while Admiral Brad Cooper acknowledged the strain but praised the ship's leadership for prioritizing crew welfare.
