Local Rangers and UTS Researchers Uncover Coral Bleaching in Northern Territory

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Indigenous rangers and researchers from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have uncovered a coral bleaching event off Groote Eylandt, despite advanced predictive technologies failing to provide any warning.
The Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers first observed the alarming color loss of coral in 2024, prompting further investigation. This unprecedented research mapped the underwater ecosystem for the first time, establishing a vital baseline for future monitoring.
UTS researcher Emma Camp highlighted that the bleaching was attributed to elevated water temperatures, yet global predictive models did not forecast this event. “We have global models that help us predict when reefs are going to bleach, but those models didn’t predict we would have had bleaching in Groote Eylandt at that time,” she explained.
Amidst the challenges of navigating crocodile-infested waters and unpredictable weather conditions, local rangers played a critical role in confirming the bleaching. Cyclones, including the impactful Category 3 Tropical Cyclone Megan, further complicated the reef's health, damaging both local vegetation and the coastal infrastructure.
Excitingly, the project also led to the cataloging of previously unrecognized coral species, with ongoing research aimed at identifying these potential new finds. Kirsten Eden from the Anindilyakwa Land Council expressed optimism about the discoveries, stating that this opens up new knowledge avenues for local communities.
