Mac Users Targeted by Infostealer Malware: How to Stay Protected

By Editor • August 17, 2026 • 1 min read

Security experts are sounding the alarm about a new strain of infostealer malware named AmnesiaStealer, which poses a serious threat to macOS users. This malware can take control of web browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, allowing hackers to access sensitive personal information.

AmnesiaStealer operates by hijacking the Chromium profile of the user, enabling it to harvest data from up to 16 different Chromium-based browsers. Once compromised, attackers can manipulate browsing sessions, steal saved logins, and even access cryptocurrency wallets.

Discovered by researchers at Jamf, the malware spreads through a deceptive password-protected ZIP file found on a counterfeit GitHub page. The installation process is triggered via a Terminal command, which users mistakenly believe is safe. To safeguard against such attacks, experts recommend exercising caution with online prompts and avoiding commands from unofficial sources, especially those that appear to come from legitimate companies.
