Mackay Celebrates Historic First International Test Match Amidst Local Excitement

By Editor • August 22, 2026 • 2 min read

Mackay, a Queensland city, is making cricket history as it hosts its inaugural international Test match, with the first day of the Australia vs. Bangladesh series completely sold out. The Great Barrier Reef Arena at Harrup Park marks a significant milestone as the twelfth venue in Australia to welcome Test cricket.

Barry Jansen, a key figure in the development of Harrup Park, took a remarkable personal risk over four decades ago by mortgaging his home to help finance the cricket arena's expansion. Reflecting on that decision, Jansen admitted to having quiet moments of anxiety when he revealed to his wife what he had done. However, he considers the venue a part of his family, having invested so much into its growth.

The journey began in the late 1980s when the local cricket association sought to expand but lacked financial support. Jansen and two others stepped up, securing a government grant and a bank loan backed by their homes. Their gamble paid off, transforming what was once a cow paddock into a vibrant cricket ground.

On the historic day, the stands were filled with fans, particularly from the local Bangladeshi community, who showcased their passion for cricket by waving flags and cheering for their team. Shagufta Hasan, a proud member of the community, expressed the collective excitement of the 32 Bangladeshi families in Mackay, highlighting their unwavering support for cricket.

Mel Dwyer, one of two official scorers for the match, described the experience as a dream come true. Dwyer, who started scoring roughly 12 years ago to stay engaged while her children played cricket, has deep roots in the sport, coming from a family of cricket enthusiasts. She fondly recalls her childhood surrounded by memorabilia dedicated to cricket legends.

Peter Kazakoff, the head curator at Harrup Park, praised the playing surface, noting how it mirrors the renowned clay soil of the Gabba. He shared that the preparation has impressed players and coaches alike, transforming the venue from a local ground to an international stage. The successful launch of Test cricket in Mackay has left many optimistic about the future of international matches in the city.
