The US Treasury Department has barred reporters from major news outlets, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg, from attending the Group of 20 finance meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. This move marks another instance of restricted media access under the Trump administration.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the decision to deny credentials was not influenced by the journalists' viewpoints, although specific individuals affected include Times reporter Alan Rappeport, who has a history of covering such events.
The New York Times condemned the exclusion, arguing that it undermines independent journalism and attempts to evade public scrutiny. They emphasized the importance of this meeting, which addresses significant issues like inflation and sanctions amid rising global tensions. Bloomberg News echoed this sentiment, asserting that the denial hampers media freedom and public accountability.
The G20 finance meeting, which brings together finance ministers and central bank governors from leading economies, is set to run from Saturday through Tuesday. The larger G20 summit is scheduled for December at Trump’s Doral golf club in Florida.
