Meet Microduck: Hugging Face's Adorable Open-Source Robot Duck

Hugging Face has introduced the Microduck, a charming little robot priced at $399, which promises to ship just in time for Christmas. Standing at 25 centimeters tall, this duck-like companion can waddle, roller skate, and even pick up objects weighing up to 800 grams with its beak.

Clem Delangue, CEO of Hugging Face, describes the Microduck as an open-source robot that users can teach new tricks through reinforcement learning. This initiative marks a significant step towards making physical AI more accessible to everyone.

The Microduck is equipped with advanced technology, including a camera, lidar sensors, and inertial measurement units (IMUs) that enable it to perceive its environment. Developers can train its behaviors in a simulation environment and then deploy these skills directly onto the robot.

While some may have privacy concerns about a robot with a camera, Delangue reassures that open-source systems provide more transparency compared to proprietary models, which can often hide their operations behind closed doors. However, he acknowledges that once software applications are added, there’s no foolproof way to ensure data privacy.

This launch comes at a time when Hugging Face is reportedly on the verge of being acquired by Nvidia, valued at $13 billion. Their long-standing partnership has included Nvidia supporting Hugging Face's infrastructure since 2023, aligning both companies in their advocacy for open-source AI.
