Melbourne's Art Music Awards Celebrate Ocean-Themed Works and Remarkable Talent

The Art Music Awards held on August 19 in Melbourne showcased a vibrant array of talent, with Mindy Meng Wang's "Opera for the Dead" winning the prestigious Work of the Year: Dramatic award. The evening was a significant triumph for Chamber Made, which secured two awards: Excellence in Experimental Practice and the Victorian State Luminary Award, celebrating its 35 years of influence in Australian music.

Oceanic themes resonated throughout the event, with Paul Stanhope's "Mahāsāgar" earning the Work of the Year: Choral title. Other notable winners included Alex Turley's "the ocean's dream of itself" for large ensemble, and Kate Milligan's "Dark Oceanography," recognized for Electroacoustic/Sound Art.

Performance accolades were highlighted by Dr. Lou Bennett AM and Paul Stanhope's First Nations collaboration, "nyilamum song cycles," winning Performance of the Year: Classical & Experimental. Professor Liza Lim AM received the Richard Gill Award for her exceptional contributions to Australian music.
