Met Gala Faces Date Change Amid Controversy Over John Galliano Honor

The Met Gala is reportedly contemplating a shift in its 2027 date following backlash against plans to honor designer John Galliano. Initially announced in July, the exhibition celebrating Galliano's work is set to be the highlight of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, making him only the third living designer to receive such recognition.

Despite his significant contributions to luxury fashion, particularly at Dior, Galliano's past is marred by controversy. In 2011, he was dismissed from Dior after being recorded making antisemitic comments. Following a court conviction for public insults related to religion and ethnicity, he sought redemption by meeting with Jewish leaders and receiving support from organizations like the Anti-Defamation League.

As the May 3 gala approaches, criticism has intensified. Prominent Jewish leaders and New York City Council speaker Julie Menin have publicly condemned the decision, labeling it a 'serious mistake.' Menin emphasized the gravity of Galliano's history of antisemitism and racism, arguing that honoring him is inappropriate given the current climate of rising hate crimes in the city.

In response to the growing discontent, Met trustees are reportedly considering rescheduling the gala, traditionally held on the first Monday of May, to the following week, particularly as May 3 coincides with Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. This potential change highlights the museum's effort to navigate the backlash while still celebrating Galliano's artistic legacy.
