Misleading Donor Practices Alleged in Northern Cyprus IVF Clinics

A troubling investigation has uncovered serious allegations against a fertility clinic in northern Cyprus, where at least 30 children, predominantly from the UK, may have been conceived using incorrect sperm or egg donors. She, like others, had meticulously selected a donor from the Cryos International sperm bank, drawn by the promise of healthy, screened donors, yet began to have doubts when her child's appearance diverged significantly from the donor's profile. Alongside Rachel, 11 out of the 30 children have undergone DNA tests revealing genetic links to Turkey or neighboring regions, contradicting the expectation of Western European ancestry promised by the clinic. Laura Bridgens, founder of the charity Donor Conceived UK, voiced her alarm at the reports, emphasizing the fundamental right of donor-conceived individuals to know their origins. Rachel's experience echoes this sentiment; after years of uncertainty, she and her son Jonah, now 13, revealed through DNA tests that, while he is biologically hers, the donor she chose was not the one who contributed. "What upsets me the most is that Jonah may have lost the opportunity to contact his donor in the future," she lamented.

The Dogus IVF Centre, a popular choice for British couples seeking affordable fertility treatments, has been criticized for its lax regulatory oversight and unverified claims of success. The clinic has been blacklisted by Cryos International, raising further questions about its practices and the validity of its advertised partnerships.

Despite the gravity of these allegations and the initiation of an official investigation by the northern Cyprus Ministry of Health, little information has emerged regarding its progress. Witnesses within the fertility community have expressed disbelief at the scale of the issue, suggesting that the potential for such widespread mismanagement indicates a deeper systemic problem rather than isolated incidents.

Dr. Sevket Alpturk, the clinic's owner, and Dr. Firdevs Uguz Tip, who has treated a number of affected families, have both denied any misconduct.
