Mother Found Not Criminally Responsible for Children's Deaths Due to Postpartum Psychosis

A Bronx judge has ruled that 26-year-old Dimone Fleming is not criminally responsible for the tragic deaths of her two sons, Daishawn and Octavius, due to severe mental illness. The decision stems from a horrific incident on November 26, 2022, where Fleming is accused of fatally stabbing her children before submerging them in a bathtub at a family shelter.

Prosecutors, after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the case, concurred that Fleming was in a state of postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings. According to psychiatrist Dr. Eric Goldsmith, she experienced hallucinations and delusions that rendered her “grossly psychotic and out of touch with reality.” This diagnosis played a crucial role in the court's determination.

On the night of the incident, a shelter worker alerted authorities, noticing unusual activity from Fleming's apartment. When police arrived, they found her behaving erratically and later discovered the children’s bodies concealed under clothing in the bathtub. Fleming reportedly confessed to the act, expressing a belief that she needed to “cleanse” her sons.

Although the ruling absolves her of criminal charges, Fleming may face an extended stay in a psychiatric facility, with her next court date set for September 18 to assess her mental health evaluations and future treatment.
