Parents of San Diego Mosque Shooter File Lawsuit Against Mental Health Facility

In a tragic unfolding of events leading up to a mass shooting at a San Diego mosque, the parents of one of the shooters are now suing a local mental health facility, claiming it failed to act on critical warnings from federal authorities.

According to a lawsuit filed on August 31, Caleb Vazquez's mother asserts that Park Mental Health Treatment did not intervene despite alarming comments her son made online regarding school shootings. Just days before the incident, the FBI alerted her to these concerning remarks made on the dark web. Following this warning, she promptly notified the treatment center, emphasizing the risk he posed.

Warning Signs Ignored

The FBI contacted Vazquez's mother on May 14, leading her to leave a message with Park Mental Health. On May 15, she communicated the FBI’s concerns to her son’s therapist and a program director at the facility. However, on the morning of May 18, the day of the shooting, staff members informed her that her son was missing, just hours before he and another teenager fatally shot three people at the mosque.

Alarming History

Vazquez's mental health issues have been documented over the years. He had previously been hospitalized after expressing a desire to commit a school shooting, and law enforcement had confiscated 26 firearms from his father due to his alarming behavior and radical views. It is reported that he and Cain Clark, the other shooter, had connected online and were both radicalized through these platforms.

Park Mental Health has publicly rejected the claims made in the lawsuit, stating that it is misguided to hold them accountable for Vazquez's actions. The facility asserts that only Vazquez and his accomplice are responsible for the tragic outcomes that ensued.
