Mother's Harrowing Experience in Melbourne Stabbing Attack: A Call for Action

A Melbourne mother, Cherie Holt, has bravely shared her traumatic experience after being stabbed multiple times in a shocking incident that unfolded in the city's CBD. The attack, which also involved her 10-year-old son being assaulted, has left the family grappling with fear and trauma.

The incident occurred outside the Victoria Police headquarters on Spencer Street on Tuesday, as Holt and her three children were returning to their apartment from a hospital visit related to her son's rare brain tumour. Holt described the moment when a man unexpectedly punched her son, sending him crashing to the ground.

"I yelled for my 16-year-old son to call the police while I picked up my 10-year-old," she recounted. In an effort to protect her children, Holt positioned herself between the attacker and her boys, leading to her own assault. "I was punched in the face and then stabbed four times—three wounds to my neck and back, and one to my arm," she detailed.

Despite the chaos, Holt's instinct to shield her children took precedence. She recalled her son screaming for her, intensifying her determination to keep the assailant focused on her. "I couldn’t let him turn back towards my children," she said, highlighting the gravity of the situation given her son's medical condition.

The attack ended only when bystanders intervened, restraining the attacker until police arrived. Holt expressed deep gratitude towards those who came to her aid, acknowledging their bravery in confronting a dangerous situation.

As she recuperates at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Holt is left to process the emotional fallout from the attack, which her children witnessed. "They saw their brother being punched and their mother attacked. It's something no child should ever have to experience," she said.

Holt has called on the state government to take stronger measures against violent crime, emphasizing that families should not have to tolerate such acts as commonplace. "We need to understand how quickly violence can erupt, even when we feel safe," she stated, underscoring the need for preventive action.

The alleged attacker, Jerry Sowood, 27, has been charged with multiple offenses, including intentionally causing injury. He is currently remanded in custody, awaiting further court proceedings.
