Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell have taken legal action against Anthropic, accusing the AI firm of a widespread scheme to illegally acquire copyrighted materials. Filed in the U.S. District Court for Northern California, the lawsuit highlights claims of torrenting and scraping thousands of works to train its AI model, Claude.
This is not the first time Anthropic has faced copyright challenges. Earlier lawsuits, including one from Concord Music Group and Universal Music Group, brought similar accusations. In a notable ruling, Anthropic was ordered to pay $1.5 billion in a previous case for pirating copyrighted material.
